NEW ORLEANS – The New Orleans Privateers overcame an early five-run deficit to take a lead but gave up an eighth inning homer in a 9-7 loss to the Mississippi Valley State Delta Devils on Wednesday at Maestri Field.
Jaxon Haynes produced the offense in the late stages to put the Delta Devils over the top and give them their first win over the Privateers on the diamond in program history.
Haynes hit a solo homer in the seventh inning to get the road team within a run. An inning later, Haynes duplicated the feat, this time with two men on as he hit a homer to left that gave the Delta Devils a 9-7 lead.
New Orleans loaded the bases with one out but Camden Farmer came in for the Delta Devils and got the next two men out on a strikeout and a line out to right. He then locked down the save, allowing just a one-out single in the ninth.
The Privateers were down 5-0 after the first inning as MVSU collected five hits including RBI singles by Eric Williams and Gabriel Huelsing.
New Orleans started their comeback in the second inning when they got on the board thanks to a
Dathan Cummings double to left-center. The Privateers narrowed the gap further with three runs in the third that included a two-run double by
Owen Smith and an RBI double from
Kruise Newman.
With the score 5-4 and the Privateers batting with two outs in the fourth,
Eddie Castillo drew a walk and
Eli Tidwell singled through the right side. That set up Smith who drilled a three-run homer down the left field line that gave the Privateers their first lead of the contest.
Delta Devils pitchers combined to allow just two hits over the last five innings in the win. Daniel Scott picked up the win behind a Delta Devils offense that produced 12 hits on the day.
