NEW ORLEANS – The New Orleans Privateers rallied from an initial UIW surge to take a fourth inning lead but could not hold off the Cardinals in a 9-6 loss on Friday night at Maestri Field.
UIW sent all nine men to the plate and the first five players reached. Tony DeJesus got the scoring started with an RBI single and Colin Cymbalista was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Thomas Lyssy punched a single into shallow center that helped the Cardinals get out to a 4-0 lead.
New Orleans spent the next four innings clawing their way back into it as they scored in each inning. The Privateers tied the game in the third inning on a squeeze bunt from
Evan Rogers that scored
Owen Smith.
In the fourth,
Miles Curley found a seam through the right side of the infield that drove in
Kareh Valentin to give New Orleans their first lead of the night at 5-4 after four innings.
The lead was short lived however as the Cardinals scored four runs in the fifth inning all with two outs. Cymbalista scored on a wild pitch to tie the game. Trent Rucker then put the Cardinals back in front on an RBI double. The Cardinals got four of their five hits in the inning with two outs.
From there, Fawster Voytko and Landon Fuller closed out the game on the mound for the Cardinals. The two pitchers combined to pitch the last 4.1 innings of the game with no hits allowed and seven strikeouts. Fuller picked up his first save of the season.
Preston Newberry went 4-for-5 with a double and two RBI with two runs scored. Cole Tabor and DeJesus also collected five hits combined.
INSIDE THE BOX
Lane Alack pitched the final 4.1 innings on the mound for the Privateers with four strikeouts and two runs allowed (one earned).
Dylan Biddick went 3-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored. Curley and
Kruise Newman each had two hits. Privateer pitchers combined for 11 strikeouts on the mound this season which tied a season-high.
