NEW ORLEANS – The New Orleans Privateers were limited to just four hits on the day and fell behind in the second inning of a 13-1 loss to the UIW Cardinals on Saturday afternoon at Maestri Field.
The Privateers committed two errors that the Cardinals took advantage of, which led to three runs and an early lead in the second inning. Trent Rucker brought in the first run on a sac fly. Preston Newberry and Cole Tabor followed with RBI singles to give the Cardinals a 3-0 lead.
New Orleans got a run back after the first two men got aboard in the bottom of the second.
Evan Rogers was hit by a pitch and
Kruise Newman singled to advance him to third. Then
Jayden Adcox brought Rogers in on a fielder's choice to make it 3-1.
That's as close as the Privateers got for the remainder of the game.
The Cardinals opened some distance on their lead with a five-run fifth inning. There were five hits in the frame including RBI singles by Colin Cymbalista, Tyler Garritano and Drake Anderson that helped the Cardinals push their lead to 8-1.
New Orleans threatened to start a rally in the bottom of the fifth when they loaded the bases with one out, but Cardinals starter, Hayden Capers induced a ground ball that turned into a double play, which kept all of UIW's lead intact.
The Cardinals scored two more runs in the eighth and finished the afternoon with two homers in the ninth from Tabor and Cymbalista.
Capers pitched six innings and picked up his first win of the season. On offense, the Cardinals had 15 hits as a team.
