Privateers Score in Bunches Early, Defeat UIW in Series Finale

NEW ORLEANS – The New Orleans Privateers brought out their Sunday best for a third straight week as they scored eight runs in the first three innings of an 11-7 win against the UIW Cardinals at Maestri Field.

Eli Tidwell hit the first of three home runs of the day on a towering fly ball into right field, his fifth of the season to get New Orleans on the board first. That came after an economical first inning from Bryson Goff where he retired the side in order on 12 pitches.

UIW tied it up in the second, but New Orleans went ahead for good in their half of the second with two runs. Evan Rogers got aboard with a single and stole second ahead of a Kruise Newman RBI single. Later in the inning, Owen Smith drove in Newman with a two-out RBI single of his own.

The Privateers opened some distance on their lead in the third. With the bases loaded, Eddie Castillo drilled the second pitch of the at-bat over the left field fence that vaulted the Privateers to a 7-1 advantage. Another run came across later in the inning to make it 8-1.

UIW threatened a comeback keyed by two Jake Weaver home runs in the fourth and fifth inning that cut the Privateer lead to 8-5. However, the Cardinals weren't able to draw any closer.

Bryson Goff got his third win of the season and Jack Garvey provided the bridge to the ninth inning with seven strikeouts in three innings.

New Orleans pulled away again when Miles Curley parked his first homer of the year, a two-run shot in the sixth inning. The lead got to 11-5 after Kareh Valentin singled back up the middle to score Newman in the seventh.

Luke Lycette shut the game down with two strikeouts in the ninth inning. The pitching staff recorded a season-high 14 strikeouts.
