NATCHITOCHES, La. –
William Andrade fanned 10 batters and
Dylan Biddick provided early offense that led to the New Orleans Privateers holding off the Northwestern State Demons 3-2 on Friday night at Brown-Stroud Field.
Andrade pitched 7.1 innings before giving way to
Lane Alack in what was the longest outing by a Privateer pitcher this season.
New Orleans led 3-1 in the eighth but a sac fly by Thomas Marsala drew the Demons closer at 3-2. The ninth inning started with a walk drawn by Sebastian Huerta and a bunt that moved pinch runner, Lane Lusk to second.
After a wild pitch got Lusk to third, Bryce Johnson bounced a grounder to the drawn in
Kareh Valentin. A play at the plate commenced and
Jayden Adcox got the tag on the foot of Lusk who tried to score. The call stood through the scrutiny of review and Alack got Colin Rains to ground out to first to deliver the Privateers their first series opening win of the season.
Biddick got the charge going early on offense against Brody Trosclair. With two outs, he came up and mashed a double off the wall that scored
Miles Curley to give the Privateers a first inning lead.
In the third, Biddick came up again and took a 91 MPH fastball over the left field fence for a two-run homer to extend the lead to 3-0. Trosclair battled through an elevated pitch count all night to eat up six innings for the Demons with 12 strikeouts to just one walk.
Kevin Robinson came in and held the Privateers scoreless through three innings. New Orleans had runners on the corners with two outs in the ninth but Robinson induced a pop out to get the Demons to the bottom of the ninth. However, it was New Orleans who made the plays behind a stellar outing from Andrade in what was his first collegiate win.
Northwestern State was held to three hits on the night. The Demons got on the board in the fourth inning on a Marsala home run.
