Six Pitchers Combine to Silence Jackson State Offense in Privateers Victory

JACKSON, Miss. – Six pitchers combined for a six-hit shutout as the New Orleans Privateers got ahead in the fourth and didn't look back in a 7-0 win over the Jackson State Tigers on Tuesday at Bob Braddy Field.

Tyler Velino, Skylar Jones, Gus Rogers, Reid Leonard, Luke Lycette and Cortland Clarke combined to stymie the Tigers lineup. As a unit they had nine strikeouts to three walks on the night. It was just the second time Jackson State had been shut out in 26 games this year.

The offense broke through in the fourth behind Eli Tidwell. After two walks drawn by Adrian Domginuez and Eddie Castillo, Tidwell doubled to drive in a run that gave the Privateers a 1-0 lead.

New Orleans scored in each of the next two innings to increase their lead to 3-0. A Dominguez RBI single drove in Kareh Valentin in the fifth. Tidwell then scored on an ensuing error after a bunt put down by Evan Rogers in the sixth.

The final punch delivered by the offense resulted in four runs in the eighth inning. Tidwell collected another extra base hit, this time a triple that brought in Kruise Newman. Valentin reached on one of five Tigers errors that scored another run and Dylan Biddick brought in another run on an RBI ground out.

Clarke came in and struck out two in his second appearance of the season. As a staff, the Privateers landed 62 percent of their 132 pitches for strikes on the night.

INSIDE THE BOX
