EDINBURG, Texas – Sergio Lopez threw 7.2 shutout innings and the UTRGV Vaqueros took the series opener 10-0 in eight innings over the New Orleans Privateers on Friday night at UTRGV Baseball Stadium.
The game began with Lopez and
William Andrade trading scoreless opening frames in what was an efficient inning for both pitchers. It looked as if Andrade would continue to match after inducing a double play to get two outs on the board in the second.
However, Chayton Fischer delivered a base hit through the right side on the first pitch he saw. That made it 1-0 Vaqueros. From there, UTRGV scored in every frame.
Armani Raygoza had a two-homer night including what was the game ending swing, a solo shot to right. Raygoza had four hits and four RBI on the night.
The Privateers were limited to just three hits which came from
Adrian Dominguez,
Karson Evans and
Dylan Biddick. Evans also drew the only walk issued by Lopez on the night. Andrade struck out four batters in 4.1 innings of work.
Rocco Garza Gongora had three hits including a double and a homer. He scored three runs for the Vaqueros. Fischer and Thomas Williams each had two hits.
Friday marked the first time the Privateers were shut out in nearly a full year since Northwestern State defeated New Orleans 1-0 on Mar. 21, 2025.
