EDINBURG, Texas –
Kruise Newman homered twice and the New Orleans Privateers made a late push but fell short in an 8-6 loss to the UTRGV Vaqueros on Saturday night at UTRGV Baseball Stadium.
The Vaqueros grabbed the lead with a three-run third inning that included a single, double, triple and home run. The homer was a two-run shot by Julius Ramirez that gave the Vaqueros the lead after New Orleans had tied it up an inning prior.
Riley Marcotte kept the Vaqueros off the scoreboard for three innings and pitched four in total with just one unearned run allowed and six strikeouts.
UTRGV was leading 5-1 in the seventh when two men got on ahead of Newman's first blast.
Jayden Adcox and
Evan Rogers both hit a single through the left side of the infield that set the stage for Newman's homer, which trimmed the Vaqueros' lead to 5-4.
The home side got a run back in the bottom of the frame though when Hank Warren singled through the right side. That hit brought home Thomas Williams and stretched the lead back out to two.
The Vaqueros added two more runs in the eighth, which turned out to be much needed after New Orleans made another late push in the final frame.
Rogers legged out an infield single and Newman followed with his second home run of the night off of Colton Vercoe on a ball that traveled 409 feet.
The Vaqueros went back to the pen and Kiké Cienfuegos came on to close the game. He proceeded to strike out the next two batters and put the finishing touches on the Vaqueros' first save of the season.
Harrison Thayer picked up the win after going into the seventh. He allowed four runs on six hits and struck out six batters.
Ramirez went 2-for-4 and had four RBI. Williams finished 3-for-3 with a triple and an RBI. Rocco Garza Gongora went 2-for-3 and scored twice.
