CHAMPAIGN, Ill. –
Evan Rogers made a game saving catch then followed with a game winning home run in the 10
th inning as the New Orleans Privateers defeated the Illinois Fighting Illini 8-7 on Sunday at Illinois Field.
With the bases loaded and two outs, Michael Farina was at the plate and he hit a ball into shallow center. Rogers sprinted back and made an over-the-shoulder catch that stretched the game into extra innings.
Then Rogers led off the top of the 10
th against closer, Reed Gannon and he homered to right on a first pitch fastball. From there,
Luke Lycette shut the game down, inducing a fly out off the bat of Jack Zebig to put the finishing touches on the win.
Illinois starter, Aidan Flynn was dominant to start and the Fighting Illini got on the board with two runs in the second and another in the fourth on a solo homer by Colin Jennings. Through four innings, Flynn had nine strikeouts and had retired all 12 batters faced.
New Orleans started to work some counts against Flynn in the fifth as
Kruise Newman and
Collin Husser both drew walks. That set up
Jake D'Altrui who blasted a 3-2 pitch over the fence in left center to tie the game.
The Privateers then surged ahead behind homers from
Dylan Biddick, which gave them the lead in the sixth and
Jayden Adcox an inning later that helped New Orleans to a 7-3 advantage.
Illinois roared back in the eighth to tie it. A.J. Putty hit a one-out solo homer that started the rally. Five batters later, J.R. Nelson tied it up with a sac fly to right, but the Privateers were not to be denied on the day. New Orleans has played six one-run games in their last eight and they are 3-3 in those contests.
Kyle Schupmann had two hits including a double and two runs scored. Will Johannes reached base three times and drove in two runs. Fighting Illini pitchers recorded 17 strikeouts on the game.
