NEW ORLEANS –
Josh Hoffmann hustled down the line on a deflected ground ball for an infield single that propelled the New Orleans Privateers to an 11-10 win over the Troy Trojans in 10 innings on Tuesday at Maestri Field.
Eli Tidwell hit an infield single to start off the 10
th inning against Drew Nelson and
Adrian Dominguez followed by drilling a double into the gap. The ball one-hopped over the wall, which forced Tidwell to stay at third. Hoffmann came up and hit a 2-2 pitch that ricocheted toward second base. A back foot throw from Sean Darnell was not in time as Tidwell came across for the Privateers' third extra inning win.
New Orleans' offense was opportunistic early as they put up seven runs in the first two innings. Five of those came across in the first inning, a frame which was capped by a two-run single from
Adrian Dominguez.
Kruise Newman hit the first of three homers on the night for the Privateers as he hit a ball 110 MPH off the bat for his ninth long ball of the season as part of the early offensive onslaught.
Troy rallied back to tie the game at 7-7 in the fourth, which came on the strength of two home runs. Jimmy Janicki drove in three of his six runs on the night with a three-run blast. Steven Meier followed with an opposite field homer that snuck over the left field wall.
The Privateers used two home runs to tie the game back up after Troy took the lead on two separate occasions.
Owen Smith drilled a solo home run to tie the score at 8-8 in the sixth. Two innings later, Tidwell sent one 428 feet over the centerfield wall to level the score at 10-10.
Eight of the Trojans' nine starters collected a hit as Troy had 16 hits on the night. Janicki landed a triple shy of the cycle and had three hits. Meier and Josh Pyne also had three hits each. Aaron Piasecki went 2-for-3 and scored three runs.
INSIDE THE BOX
Skylar Jones pitched the last two innings and picked up the win to move to 2-1 on the season. Dominguez and Smith each had three hits on the night. Smith also scored four runs. The Privateers drew nine walks against the Trojans pitching staff. Privateer pitchers combined for 14 strikeouts on the mound.
