HOUSTON, Texas – The HCU Huskies got out the gate quick and never looked back as they defeated the New Orleans Privateers 15-1 in the series opener on Friday night at Husky Field.
HCU started the game with a four-run first inning. After two walks to begin their night at the plate, Jeremy Rader singled to drive in the first run. Luke Bard followed with an RBI single and Katcher Halligan drove in two more with a single back up the middle.
The Huskies' biggest inning came in the third, which included a pair of three-run home runs. Nico DeFazio hit the first one and Rader came up with the second as the Huskies pushed their advantage to 12-0.
New Orleans threatened the score in the fourth when
Dylan Biddick drew a walk and
Miles Curley hit one of his two doubles on the night. However, Joshua Carvalho got a foul pop out and a strikeout to get out with the shutout still intact as he picked up the win.
Carvalho (3-4) picked up the win after he went five innings in relief behind Trent Barnes who threw the opening inning for the Huskies.
New Orleans got on the board in the seventh when
Eli Tidwell led off the frame with a double. He was later driven in by a
Dathan Cummings RBI single. Cummings later tried to score from second on an infield single, but was called out at the plate to end the game.
HCU had 15 runs on 11 hits and drew nine walks at the plate. Rader went 3-for-4 with four RBI. Halligan and Levi Castilleja each had two hits. Jack Walker reached base three times and scored two runs.
INSIDE THE BOX
The Privateers were held to five hits on the night as they suffered their third run-rule loss in conference play. Curley went 2-for-3 with two doubles and Biddick drew three walks to bolster his season total to 41 free passes on the season.
