Three-Run Sixth Inning Propels South Alabama Past Privateers

NEW ORLEANS – The New Orleans Privateers struck first with a home run in the fourth inning but South Alabama rallied in the back half of the game to snatch a 4-2 decision on Wednesday night at Maestri Field.

Miles Curley put the Privateers on the board first as he hit a solo homer to right, his fifth of the season to give New Orleans a 1-0 advantage. It was the first hit of the game off Jaguars starter, Hayden O'Dell.

An inning later, the Privateers extended their lead to 2-0. Eli Tidwell drilled a ball to deep center that carried to the wall and legged out a triple. He was brought in by Carson Hepworth who hit a single to the opposite field.

South Alabama bounced back though and drilled a pair of homers in the sixth inning to take the lead. Mike Young started the frame with a solo blast that cut the Privateer lead in half. After a one-out walk issued to Marc Stephens, the Jaguars got the lead thanks to Rett Johnson's two-run homer.

The Jaguars got an insurance run in the ninth inning after Brennon Wright set the table with a bunt single. Two batters later, Stewart Puckett hit a line drive to center that scored Wright and pushed the Jaguars lead to 4-2.

In the bottom of the ninth, New Orleans got a leadoff single from Kruise Newman. Three batters later, Dathan Cummings hit a two-out single to get the tying run aboard. Jaxon Shineflew bounced back though by recording a strikeout to end the game and stop the Privateers' five-game winning streak in the all-time series.

O'Dell got the win as he went five innings and struck out six batters with no walks allowed. Johnson went 3-for-4 with a double, a homer and two RBI. Shineflew picked up his fourth save of the season as the Jaguars pitching staff had 14 strikeouts to two walks.

INSIDE THE BOX
Cummings went 2-for-3 with a walk and has nine hits in his last 20 at-bats. Jack Garvey threw two scoreless innings and William Andrade also had two scoreless frames. Gus Rogers struck out three batters in his inning of work and the Privateers had nine strikeouts as a pitching staff.
