THIBODAUX, La. – The New Orleans Privateers pulled away late and led throughout a 10-4 win to open the doubleheader at Nicholls on Saturday. The Colonels rallied back from a big early deficit to take the nightcap 11-10 to split the day at Ray E. Didier Field.
GAME ONE
The Privateers grabbed the lead in the third inning when
Miles Curley reached on an error which allowed
Jayden Adcox to score from second base. The Privateer bats took over from there as they hit three home runs and scored four runs in the ninth to pull away.
Dylan Biddick parked the first of his two home runs on the game, a solo shot in the fifth to make it 2-0. Two innings later,
Kruise Newman drove a ball out to deep right with two men on to give the Privateers a 6-0 edge.
That was all behind
Bryson Goff who kept the Colonels off the scoreboard until the seventh inning as he picked up fifth win on the season.
Nicholls made a late push behind four runs over the next two frames. Fisher Ingersoll homered to break the shutout and the Colonels narrowed the gap to 6-4, but the Privateers were not to be denied in the opener.
A four-run ninth inning keyed by three extra base hits including a Biddick homer and run scoring doubles from
Eli Tidwell and
Owen Smith ensured the Privateers closed out the first game.
Skylar Jones pitched the last 2.1 innings for New Orleans.
Jayden Adcox reached base all five times he got to the plate.
Evan Rogers also reached base four times in the win.
GAME TWO
Nicholls rallied back from an 8-1 deficit after three innings and Eli Waters became the fifth Colonels pitcher to collect a save as Nicholls won the back end of the doubleheader 11-10.
The Privateers broke the game open early behind a pair of two-run singles from
Dathan Cummings and
Kareh Valentin as part of a seven-run third inning. New Orleans was in cruise control until the Colonels started their rally behind a four-run fourth inning.
Greyson Shafer hit the first of two home runs in the fourth as he parked a three-run homer to help the Colonels cut the New Orleans lead to 8-5.
Two innings later, Nicholls surged ahead behind a string of hits that was capped off by Nico Rijo-Berger's two-run single, which put Nicholls ahead 9-8. The Colonels added to that lead when Logan Terry homered to drive in two runs in the seventh.
New Orleans got it back to within a run after Smith singled through the left side of the infield to score a pair of runs off Cole Poirrier. However, Waters came on and got the Colonels out of the eighth and set down the Privateers in order in the ninth to preserve the win.
