Valiant Privateers Take #10 Southern Miss to Wire in One-Run Loss

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The New Orleans Privateers grabbed a first inning lead and battled #10 Southern Miss to the wire but fell just short in a 3-2 loss to the Golden Eagles on Tuesday at Pete Taylor Park at Hill Denson Field.

The Golden Eagles got to the bottom of the ninth inning in a tie game. With two men on and one out, Lane Alack struck out Kyle Morrison to put the game on the brink of extra innings. However, two batters later, Matthew Russo found a seam on the right side for a walk-off single as the Golden Eagles survived the staunch challenge put forth by the Privateers.

New Orleans got ahead early on a two-out, two-strike base hit by Evan Rogers that drove in two runs. His single scored Dylan Biddick and Kruise Newman to give the Privateers an early lead.

New Orleans loaded the bases later in the inning but JW Armistead induced a strikeout to end the threat without any further damage on the scoreboard.

Bryson Goff threw 5.2 strong innings against the Golden Eagles and threw 60 of his 99 pitches for strikes. The Golden Eagles got a run in the second after Drey Barrett singled to drive in Ben Higdon.

The Golden Eagles managed to tie the game in the sixth with two outs when Barrett came up again and delivered an RBI double through the left side of the infield.

That's where the score remained as the Privateers had at least one baserunner in every inning but could not dent the scoreboard any further. Colby Allen pitched the last three innings on the mound for the Golden Eagles and snagged the win, his third of the season.

Barrett went 3-for-3 to lead the Southern Miss offense which had 10 hits on the night. Russo and Seth Smith each added two hits. Golden Eagles pitchers combined for 12 strikeouts.

INSIDE THE BOX
The Privateers drew nine walks as a team. Biddick, Eli Tidwell and Owen Smith combined for seven of those nine free passes. Rogers went 3-for-5 and Dathan Cummings added two hits on the night. Tidwell, Biddick and Jayden Adcox each added a hit.
