NEW ORLEANS –
Jayden Adcox blasted a first pitch for a go-ahead three-run homer in the seventh as the New Orleans Privateers defeated the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders 6-4 on Friday at Maestri Field.
After two men got aboard on a walk and a hit-by-pitch with one out, Easten Smith was called upon out of the pen. His first pitch fastball was driven 383 feet by Adcox for his fourth home run of the season.
Jack Garvey came on in relief for
Riley Marcotte who pitched seven solid innings. Garvey retired the side in order with two strikeouts in the eighth and also got the first batter of the ninth on a strikeout.
The Islanders loaded the bases with two outs and had Jackson Smith at the plate, but
Lane Alack came on and didn't break a sweat. His first pitch induced a soft lineout to
Kareh Valentin and Alack collected his fifth save of the year, which now ties him with Ben Norton of HCU for the conference lead in saves.
Kruise Newman got the Privateers out to a hot start on offense in the opening frame. After
Miles Curley hustled to stay out of what would have been an inning-ending double play in the first, Newman hit an opposite field home run, his second long ball of the weekend to put the Privateers up 2-0.
That score held until New Orleans added another run when
Dathan Cummings doubled off the left field fence to bring in
Eli Tidwell in the fourth, which stretched the advantage to 3-0.
The Islanders worked their way back with two runs in the fifth, one of which scored on a wild pitch. A sixth inning RBI triple from Isaiah Afework tied the game and the Islanders moved ahead an inning later when Jack Bergstrom parked a solo home run.
Afework and Sanchez combined for five of the Islanders' eight hits.
INSIDE THE BOX
Marcotte picked up his second win of the season and he did not walk a batter over seven innings of work. Though the Privateers were limited to five hits, two of those left the yard and directly accounted for four of the six runs.
