OFFICIAL SOUTHLAND RELEASE
NEW ORLEANS - Coleton Benson,
Irish Coquia and
Kedrick Osby were named to the Southland Conference All-Academic men's basketball team by the league office Wednesday morning.
Benson earned his degree in Interdisciplinary Studies and finished his collegiate career with a 3.364 GPA. The second-team All-Southland selection averaged 16.3 points per game this season and was the only Privateer to play in all 33 games.
Coleton broke the school and Southland records for free-throw percentage after making 92.8% of his attempts from the charity stripe. He also made 39.8% of his shots from the floor, including 35.9% of his 3-pointers.
He finished the season with four games of 30-plus points — the most in the league — and 10 games of 20-plus points. The senior was named Southland Player of the Week after his 33-point outburst against Tulane in November.
Osby finished the year with a cumulative GPA of 3.545 while working on his undergraduate degree in Human Performance and Health Promotion. A key contributor off the bench, the junior averaged 4.9 points per game and three rebounds per game in 32 outings this season.
Kedrick scored in double figures five times this season. His best outing came against eventual league champion McNeese, when he scored 16 points on 5-of-8 shooting in 32 minutes. Osby finished the season 22-of-55 (40%) from beyond the arc — the best percentage on the team among regular 3-point shooters.
Coquia is the third Southland All-Academic selection for the Privateers this season. He has a cumulative GPA of 3.308 while working on his degree in Interdisciplinary Studies. Coquia averaged 2.7 points and 1.2 assists per game while appearing in 25 games for UNO this season.
His best outing was a career-high 10-point performance at Memphis in December. The junior played 20 minutes that night and made three of his five shots from the floor. He also recorded a career-high six assists at FedEx Forum.
To be eligible for Southland All-Academic team status, a student-athlete must have a cumulative GPA of 3.25 or above before the conclusion of the sport's championship semester and have completed one full semester at his or her current institution. Student-athletes also must have competed in at least 50% of their team's competitions during the season.
Before Wednesday, the last Privateer men's basketball student-athlete to earn Southland All-Academic Team honors was Derek St. Hilaire following the 2021-22 season. Other previous honorees include Ezekiel Charles (2018-19), Travin Thibodaux (2016-17) and Kevin Hill (2015-16 and 2014-15).
