Lonnika Thompson was hired in June 2023 and is in the midst of her first season on the Lakefront.
Thompson worked with the point guards, which had a standout year. DeArica Pryor was named All-Southland and All-Louisiana. Brianna Ellis had 29 steals in 20 games before sustaining a season-ending injury. Alexis Calderon made the Southland All-Defensive Team.
Thompson has been with Texas A&M-International since 2019. In her second season with the Dustdevils, the team won the Lone Star Conference South Division Championship. It was the first title in the program's history. The Dustdevils were also ranked in the top five in their region.
That season, Texas A&M-International also beat a pair of Division I opponents in Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and Weber State. Last year, the team set a single game program record for steals with 28.
Prior to her time at Texas A&M-International, Thompson was a varsity head coach at Eastside HS in Gainesville, Fla. After coaching the Rams to a district runner-up finish in 2016-17, Thompson guided Eastside to the top of the district the following season and a Regional Finalist appearance.
Thompson prepped locally at McDonogh 35 and spent a year at Trinity Valley CC before transferring to Florida where she started 50 games.
