Stopa helped the Privateers win NCAA Division II golf championships in 1971 and 1972 and was the Division II individual medalist as a freshman in '71. He was a first-team All American in '71 and earned second-team honors the next season.

Stopa, who serves as the pro at Audubon Golf Course in New Orleans, won the Southern Junior Amateur championship in 1970 and won New Orleans Golf Association city titles in '71 and '72. He won the United States Golf Association Public Links championship in 1973 shortly before turning pro. He has competed infrequently on the PGA Tour since 1975.
