NEW ORLEANS – The University of New Orleans made a statement in the paint, handing Selma a 78-58 defeat on Tuesday night at Lakefront Arena.

Beaten in the paint by an average of 26 points in their first two games of the campaign, UNO (1-2) responded by outscoring SU (1-5) 48-26 in the paint. The result for the Privateers in reversing the trend was a victory, the first for Mark Slessinger at the helm of the UNO program.

“It was a tremendous victory for the University of New Orleans, the campus and the city,” said Slessinger. “We were proud to represent both tonight and play hard.”

“Tonight's effort was a good culmination of an entire fall's worth of work with everyone on the team making a positive contribution.”

Antonio Wertz played a large part in the success in the paint, posting team-highs with 15 points and nine rebounds. The leading returning scorer from last season, Wertz was 7 of 12 from the field for the game after shooting 2 of 15 over the first two contests.

Max Banchy also notched 15 points, equaling a career-high from a win against Concordia-Selma last February while Albert Peterson rounded out the double-digit scorers with 11 points.

Jamie Washington was the top scorer for SU with 17 points with Moses Griffin adding another 11.

The Bulldogs gained their lone lead of the game just 1:02 into the contest.

UNO bounced back from the early 2-0 deficit by scoring 13 of the next 14 points and never looked back.

The Privateers shot 38.9 percent in the first half on way to a 38-31 advantage before increasing their lead to a high of 26 points in the second half on the back of 44.4 percent shooting.

UNO will return to action on Saturday at 4 p.m. when it faces Southeastern (Fla.) at Lakefront Arena. Prior to the game is a 'Pre-Game Party' in the Spotlights Lounge sponsored by the Privateer Athletic Foundation and the UNO International Alumni Association, beginning at 2 p.m.
