NEW ORLEANS - The University of New Orleans basketball team will play at home for the second straight contest, hosting Southeastern (Fla.) at 4 p.m. on Saturday at Lakefront Arena.
UNO (1-2) enters the weekend coming off a 20-point victory over Selma (Ala.) this past Tuesday. The victory was the first for first-year Privateer head coach
Mark Slessinger on the Lakefront after spending over a decade as an assistant at Northwestern State.
Slessinger's team displayed the style he preaches by forcing 24 turnovers by SU and featuring a lineup in which nine players received at least 11 minutes on the floor. On the season, UNO is forcing an average of 21.6 turnovers and 11 players are averaging at least 10.7 minutes a game.
To the Privateer advantage this season, the scoring has come from all corners of the floor.
Six different players have scored in double-figures at least once this year with
Antonio Wertz,
Max Banchy and
Albert Peterson joining the club on Tuesday. Wertz and Banchy posted matching 15-point efforts with Peterson adding 11 points.
With 8.3 points and 6.3 rebounds a game, Wertz leads the team in each category.
Lovell Cook at 7.3 points and
Antonio Holmes with 3.3 rebounds follow Wertz as the team leaders in the two statistical categories.
Saturday's foe SEU (5-2) will be a familiar squad for the returnees.
Last season, the Fire emerged with an 87-82 double-overtime victory against the Privateers. Wertz went down with an injury nine minutes into the loss with SEU emerging victorious despite last-second shots by UNO towards the end of regulation and the first overtime.
The Fire are a formidable foe once more and have won one of their three contests against NCAA Division II competition, including a victory over Privateer' regional foe Tampa last week.
Malcolm Pollock is the leading scorer (16.7 ppg) for SEU and ranks No.4 nationally at the NAIA level in total steals with 18.
Saturday's contest will be broadcast in the greater New Orleans on WGSO 990-AM and on the Internet at WGSO.com. Live video and periodic stat updates for the game can be found on UNOPrivateers.com.
Season tickets are still on sale by calling (504) 280-GAME with individual tickets available on TicketMaster.com or by visiting the Lakefront Arena Box Office.
UNO will continue its homestand on Monday against Tennessee Temple with tip scheduled for 7 p.m.
UNO Alumni & Athletics Pre-Game Party
Saturday's contest features a 'Pre-Game Party' sponsored by the UNO athletic department, Privateer Athletic Foundation and the UNO International Alumni Association.
Starting at 2 p.m. in the Spotlights Lounge at a cost of $30 – all participants will receive a floor ticket to Saturday's game as well as access to food and drinks. Coach Slessinger will give a pre-game 'Chalk Talk' while former Lady Privateer and current Ursuline Academy head girls' basketball coach Andrea Williams will stop by to explain how receiving an athletic scholarship at UNO provided her an opportunity to reach her goals.
Fans will have access to the Spotlights Lounge beginning at 2 p.m. and will also have the ability to return to the location at halftime. All participants in the event will have the opportunity to enter a contest for an all-expense paid trip to Hawaii with the men's basketball team in February.
