OAKLAND, Calif. - Saint Mary's swept a doubleheader against the University of New Orleans late Friday night, opening play with a 14-0 victory before completing the sweep with a 7-3 win in the nightcap.
In the opener, Mark Anderson (4-1) pitched a complete game shutout, his second complete game of the season for SMC (8-10). Anderson allowed just two hits, walked two and struck out seven as UNO (1-21) went without a run for the fourth time this season.
Five players had at least three hits apiece for the Gaels, who pounded out 22 in the game against the Privateers.
Troy Channing was 3-for-5 with a home run in the third inning that was part of a five-run frame that put SMC in the driver's seat with an early 6-0 lead. By the conclusion of the fourth inning, the Gaels' advantage grew to 8-0 as they ended the night of Privateer starter
Tyler Sanders (0-5), who surrendered eight runs on 14 hits.
SMC continued their scoring with Sanders out of the game, adding two more runs in the bottom of the fifth when Patrick Wisdom hit a home run off of
Cory Hoffman, part of a 4-for-5 performance for the third baseman. The Gaels finished with four runs in the eighth to close out the offensive outburst.
Nolan Church and
Andrew Garcia posted the lone hits for UNO on matching 1-of-3 performances. Church also reached base on a walk as the Privateers had just seven baserunners in the contest.
In the nightcap, the UNO pitching staff limited SMC to just nine hits and five earned runs, but was unable to get an assist from the offense or defense as the squad committed three errors and racked up just four hits.
The Gaels scored two runs in the first with an error by the first baseman allowing the second tally. SMC struck for three more in the third after UNO's
Chris Geronimo scored on a
Blake LeBlanc single in the top of the inning.
After the Gaels posted another run in the fourth for a 6-1 lead, the Privateers trimmed the deficit to two on a Church two-run bomb that scored
Beau Boudreaux. The scoring was the last for the Privateers who yielded one final run in the bottom of the sixth.
Picking up the win for SMC was Martin Agosta (2-3), who allowed the only four hits of the game to the Privateers over his six innings of work, while striking out eight. The Gaels relief pitching combined for five strikeouts in three innings.
Offensively, Donald Collins was 3-for-5 with two runs to lead SMC with Church's 1-for-4 with a run and two RBIs pacing the Privateers.
Zach Kelt (1-4) was the pitcher of record for UNO, allowing six runs - four earned - on five hits while walking three and striking out three.
Kyle Blancaneaux relieved Kelt by allowing a single run on four hits in three innings of relief.
With inclement weather in the forecast, the two teams will resume their series at 3 p.m. CST on Sunday afternoon. A venue for Sunday has not been determined.
