SELMA, Ala. – The University of New Orleans men's basketball team will look to end their campaign on a high note as they visit Selma (Ala.) on Monday night at 7:30 p.m.
UNO (17-14) defeated SU (8-10) by a 78-58 score in the first meeting between the two teams, a contest that occurred on Nov. 15 at Lakefront Arena and handed Privateer head coach
Mark Slessinger his first victory at the helm of the program.
In the previous encounter, UNO controlled the paint, outscoring the Bulldogs 48-26 with
Antonio Wertz narrowly missing a double-double with 15 points and nine rebounds. Wertz is second on the Privateers in points per game with 11.3 and comes off a 16-point effort against Champion Baptist on Saturday.
The victory over CBC clinched a second consecutive winning campaign for UNO and gave the Privateers a combined 33 wins over two seasons. A win on Monday would give the team its most wins over two seasons since the program posted 37 from 1996-98 under Tic Price and Joey Stiebing.
The history potential does not stop there as
Brandon Knight enters his final collegiate game with an opportunity to etch his name in the school record book in two categories.
Knight, who is currently tied with Terry Gill (1973-74) for sixth in school history with 148 assists in a single season. The guard's 4.7 assists per game average this year is the most since Jamie McNeilly dished out 5.6 a contest in 2005-06.
Knight is also having one of the top single-season free throw shooting performances in school history. His 84.5 percent clip on 49 of 58 shooting currently ranks ninth with one more made free throw needed to qualify for the category and obtain the highest success rate at the since Desmond Baxter made 90.7 percent of his 75 attempts in 1999-2000.
SU's 8-10 record does not include a late contest against Oakwood (Ala.) on Saturday night.
The Bulldogs are led by Jamie Washington and Moses Griffin with 13.6 and 10.7 points per game, respectively. Adrian Nelson is the top rebounder with 5.8 grabs off the glass per game while also pacing the squad with a 51.5 percent clip from the field.
Monday's contest ends the 43
rd season of UNO basketball for a program that enters the week with a 726-510 record all-time.
