KISSIMMEE, Fla. –
Brandon Canady led four players in double-figures as the University of New Orleans posted a season-high 94 points in a 94-76 victory over Florida Christian on Saturday afternoon.
Several days after establishing a career-high with 17 points against Xavier, Canady matched his mark with 17 more for
UNO (14-11) to help end a five-game losing skid on the road. Canady made 4 of 5 shots from beyond the arc for a Privateer squad that connected on seven of their 12 long-range attempts for the contest.
“Canady is playing really well right now and the extra work he has put in is paying off on the court,” said assistant coach
Kris Arkenberg. “As a whole, our team got some good looks at the basket today, playing unselfish basketball, making the extra pass and finding the bottom of the basket.”
Antonio Wertz played a big role offensively as well, posting the fourth double-double of his career. Wertz scored 13 points while pulling down a game-high 16 total rebounds, seven of which came on the offensive glass.
“It was an excellent performance by Antonio today, who provided great leadership on the floor,” said Arkenberg. “Our team fed off of his energy, particularly early in the contest as we built our lead.”
Other top contributors for UNO were
Max Banchy and
Lovell Cook with 13 and 12 points, respectively.
A.J. Williams paced all scorers in the contest with 21 points for FCC (13-11). Terrence Taylor and JoJo Wood scored 17 and 11 points, respectively for the Suns.
UNO shot 63.6 percent from the field in the opening half to build up a 58-42 advantage.
The team's shooting clip dipped to 42.9 percent in the second half, though the team still led in the scoring column after the break by a 36-34 margin. The Privateers' offensive production benefited from a solid performance at the charity stripe, where the team was 21 of 26.
Saturday's win was the 50
th career victory for UNO head coach
Mark Slessinger, who picked up his first 36 while at the helm of Northland Pioneer College in Arizona earlier in his career.
The Privateers' next appearance on the floor will be its final one at Lakefront Arena this season as the UNO hosts Loyola on Wednesday at 7 p.m. The game is part of 'Diversity Week' activities on campus and will feature free t-shirts and mini-basketballs for students, amongst other promotions.
“We are really excited about playing at home on Wednesday,” said Slessinger. “Our team is looking forward to all the student activities surrounding the game put on by our athletic department and the Office of UNO Admissions.”
The men's contest is the backend of a doubleheader with the Lady Privateers, who will tip off at 4:30 p.m.
