NEW ORLEANS – The University of New Orleans will host a basketball doubleheader against crosstown foe Loyola on Wednesday at Lakefront Arena beginning with the women's game at 5 p.m. followed by the men at approximately 7 p.m.
Both games will be aired on WGSO 990 AM with video coverage available on UNOPrivateers.com.
In the women's contest, UNO (0-21) will resume play for the first time after a season-long 12 day hiatus following the squad's 65-59 loss to Auburn-Montgomery on Jan. 26.
The Lady Privateers will seek to rekindle the flame from their first half against AUM, in which they scored a season-best 35 points. The leading player during that first 20 minutes was
Keri Thomas, who went on to match her career-high of 20 points for the contest.
Thomas is now averaging an even 10 points per game on the season after a six-game stretch in which she is posting 15.3 points and 3.7 rebounds a contest. The junior guard has not dipped below 13 points in any of the games during that period of time.
Another scoring option for head coach Keeshawn Carter's team as of late has been
Mirjam Sipos, who has topped 50 percent from the field in her last two outings and pushed her scoring average to 12.4 points a contest. Sipos shot 7 of 13 against AUM to follow up a 5 of 9 performance against Delta State a few nights prior.
Across the floor will be a Loyola (19-2) women's basketball team ranked No. 20 in the NAIA national poll released Monday. The Wolfpack have won four straight including a victory at Spring Hill on Saturday.
In the team's previous meeting, LU defeated UNO 84-52 on Jan. 2 behind a 23-point, 11-rebound effort by Jasmine Brewer. Brewer averages 16.3 points a game and currently is third in the NAIA in field goal percentage with a 57.7 percent clip.
The nightcap features a UNO (14-11) men's program playing their final game of the season at Lakefront Arena. The Privateers will play their home finale at the Human Performance Center on Feb. 25.
Home has been a great place for a UNO squad that is 11-2 this year on the Lakefront and has served up five victories without a defeat in its previous five contests all-time against LU (14-8).
The Privateers hope to continue their solid offensive performance from Saturday, when they scored a season-high 94 points against Florida Christian in a win.
UNO shot 7 of 12 from beyond the arc against FCC to establish a new season-best of 58.3 percent with
Brandon Canady nailing four of his attempts from long-range on way to 17 points. It was Canady's second straight game with 17 points following a similar outing against Xavier in The Barn last Wednesday.
Saturday's win also featured the third double-double of the season for
Antonio Wertz, who pulled down 16 rebounds with his 13 points. Wertz is second on the Privateer roster with 10.8 points, right behind
Lovell Cook's team-best 14.0.
UNO will seek a series split with a LU team that defeated them 85-79 on Jan. 14 in The Den. Corey Gray scored 33 points in the previous meeting and is the Wolfpack's top scorer at 18.2 points a game.
LU is 6-1 on the season against in-city foes including sweeps of XULA and Dillard, while splitting an in-season home-and-home with Southern-New Orleans.
Following the doubleheader, the UNO women's basketball team will resume their season on Monday, Feb. 13 at 5:30 p.m. inside Lakefront Arena against Mobile with the Privateer men's team set to face Hawaii on Feb. 15 at 11 p.m. CT
