NEW ORLEANS – Playing at home for the first time since Dec. 12, New Orleans led wire-to-wire in defeating Champion Baptist 87-50 on Saturday afternoon at Lakefront Arena.
UNO improved to 4-11 on the season, ending a six-game losing streak in the process. All six defeats came away from the friendly confines of Lakefront Arena, where the team is 4-3 this season and 17-5 under head coach
Mark Slessinger.
The Privateers received a double-double from freshman
Kevin Hill, who led four scorers in double figures for the contest. A product of John Ehret, Hill posted his first career double-double by scoring 10 points and grabbing a career-high 12 rebounds.
Lovell Cook was the top scorer for UNO with 19 points.
Rarlensee Nelson added 12 points and nine assists while
Tommy Hobbs matched his career-high with 10 points.
Nelson accounted for the first six points of the game, all on the fast break for UNO. With CBC (4-18) shooting 1 of 14 from the field to begin the contest and failing to convert from the field for a stretch of 7:14, the Privateers built an 18-4 advantage.
UNO carried a 39-21 lead into the break after having an edge as high as 21 points at the 6:09 mark.
In the second half, the Privateers improved their shooting from the first half. UNO connected on 48.8 percent of their attempts after the break from the field compared to 44.7 percent in the opening half.
The visiting Tigers had some momentum on their side early in the second half, cutting the lead to 17 points at 58-41.
UNO responded by scoring the next 18 points capped by a
Travis Avery lay-up over the next four minutes of play to push the advantage to over 30 points for the first time.
CBC was led in defeat by Brandon Likins with 27 points and 10 rebounds. Likins entered the contest averaging 25.5 points and 15 rebounds in two prior career contests against the Privateers.
UNO will resume play on Jan. 19 at Rice University in Houston. Tip is scheduled for 7 p.m. with the broadcast slated for WGSO 990 AM.
NOTES
The team's 22 steals were one shy of the school record set on Nov. 27, 1985 against Southwestern (Kan.)
Kevin Hill's double-double was the second on the season for the Privateers. Earlier this year,
Rarlensee Nelson scored 10 points and dished out 10 assists at Duquesne.
Cory Dixon and
Kevin Hill pulled down 10 rebounds apiece in the first half alone. Both totals established career-highs for the Privateer pair. Dixon's previous-best was eight against Bethune-Cookman on Nov. 15 with Hill's previous career mark coming against Blue Mountain College on Nov. 20.
Saturday's game represented the first career start for junior guard
Maurice County. It was also the second career start for
Evans Ganapamo, who last started on Dec. 8 at Duquesne.
With the Privateers' bench outscoring their CBC counterparts 41-5, UNO improved to 12-2-1 when only factoring bench scoring.
