GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The New Orleans volleyball program ended its opening weekend with a 3-0 (25-15, 25-17, 25-6) loss to defending Northeast Conference champion LIU-Brooklyn on Saturday afternoon.
The setback was the third on the weekend for UNO (0-3) in the Campus USA Credit Union Invitational hosted by No. 9 Florida. The Privateers previously dropped matches to the host Gators and Atlantic Coast Conference foe Duke.
UNO was competitive in the first two sets with LIU-Brooklyn (1-2).
The Privateers trailed by five as late as 15-10 in the opening frame. In the second set, the squad staked to a 6-5 advantage in the second set before the Blackbirds gained the momentum with a 10-1 run.
For the match, sophomore
Alyssa Podwell was the top offensive threat for UNO by collecting a season-high three kills. Junior
Kelsea Hundtoft and freshman
Cara Sander added two kills apiece.
Senior setter
Ariane Labrzycki totaled six assists for the Privateers with the squad also receiving a team-high seven digs from sophomore libero
Lauren Levy.
Jessica Rice had nine kills to lead LIU-Brooklyn, which had three players with at least eight kills. Annika Foit and Tamara Ignjic added eight kills apiece for the Blackbirds. Vera Djuric was responsible for 29 assists with Adrianna Vinas Joy leading all players with nine digs.
The season will resume on Tuesday at 7 p.m. for UNO which visits Conference USA opponent Southern Miss. Information on how to follow the contest will be shared on UNOPrivateers.com on Monday.
