MONTGOMERY, Ala. – For a second straight day, the New Orleans volleyball team dropped its first match at the Alabama State/ISTAP Collegiate Cup before coming out strong to win its second match.
UNO (2-10) was defeated 3-0 (25-20, 25-16, 25-11) by Jacksonville State on Saturday morning before posting a 3-0 (25-22, 26-24, 25-19) victory over Arkansas-Pine Bluff in the nightcap.
In the day's second match,
Taylor Berry totaled 11 kills to lead UNO.
Cara Sander and
Marti Richmiller added eight and seven kills, respectively for the Privateers.
The offense produced its top match of the season, hitting .268 as a collective. In addition to the hitters, the UNO offense received a lift from setters
Ariane Labrzycki and
Celeste Ramirez, who distributed 17 and 10 assists, respectively.
Defensively, the Privateers held UAPB (3-13) to a .133 hitting percentage for the match. Sander led both teams with 10 digs with Richmiller and
Lauren Levy posting eight apiece for UNO.
The Golden Lions' Audrey Sherles shared match-high kill honors with Berry by posting 11 kills. UAPB setter Jordan Foyer was responsible for 26 assists while Courtney Brand was the top defensive player for the squad with eight digs.
In the opening match of the day, JSU (5-6) took advantage of a .323 hitting percentage to defeat the Privateers. The Gamecocks' Emily Rutherford and Nicole Merget had 13 and 10 kills, respectively.
UNO was paced in the defeat by Sander, who totaled eight kills. Richmiller and Ramirez added six and five, respectively for the Privateers, who were held to .057 hitting clip.
Ramirez distributed 16 assists and narrowly missed a double-double when she posted a team-high nine digs. Richmiller and Levy had eight digs apiece.
The Privateers will now turn their attention to Southland Conference play for the first time, beginning with a weekend road swing through Stephen F. Austin and Northwestern State. UNO will face SFA on Thursday, Sept. 19 at 6:30 p.m. before heading east to NSU for a 2 p.m. meeting on Saturday, Sept. 21.
