Privateers Close Campaign at Sam Houston State

HUNTSVILLE, Texas – New Orleans Privateers men's and women's basketball will conclude their inaugural Southland seasons when they travel to Huntsville, Texas for a pair of games against Sam Houston State on Saturday starting at 1:30 p.m.

Five Privateers seniors will be donning the blue and silver for the final time in their careers on Saturday afternoon.  Privateers women Samantha Gray, and Amber Clay alongside men's players Cory Dixon, Isaac Mack, and Traddarius McPhearson have combined to play 251 games for New Orleans, and have scored a combined 1,672 points since the start of the 2012-13 season.

The women's programs will meet for just the third time, and the first time outside of New Orleans, with the series tied at one game apiece. Sam Houston State defeated the Privateers earlier this season 78-47 in New Orleans on Jan. 18. The Privateers won the first meeting between the two schools in December of 2009 at the Human Performance Center (71-64).

Following their best effort of the season last Saturday in a last minute defeat to Northwestern, the Privateers Women (0-28, 0-17 Southland) were defeated 83-51 at Lamar on Thursday. In the contest Danielle Davis had the second-best scoring effort of her career, scoring 20 points on 7-of-10 shooting, including connecting on 3-of-4 beyond the three-point arc. Another young Privateer had a nice night as well, with Raven Coleman scoring 9 points and grabbing 8 rebounds.

The Privateers women continue to be lead in scoring by freshman Octavia Wilson, who tallies 9.2 points per contest. Wilson is followed by Danielle Davis, who averages 8.4 points per game. On the glass Yasmin Taylor leads the team averaging 6.2 rebounds per game.

The Bearkat women (12-15, 7-10 Southland) enter the contest following a victory over Southeastern on Thursday night, snapping a four game losing streak. With their best offensive output of the season (93 points) all five SHSU starters scored in double-figures. Junior post player Angela Beadle led the team with 29 points on 9-of-11 shooting, and grabbed 17 rebounds.

On the season, Beadle is averaging a double-double with 15.9 points per game and 10.5 rebounds per game. Her points per game rank fifth in the league, while her rebound efforts put her second on the boards in the Southland. She's one of just two women this season to average a double-double in the Southland. In the first game with New Orleans this season, she had 15 points on 5-of-7 shooting, and collected 8 rebounds.

Saturday's meeting will be the sixth contest between the two men's programs, with Sam Houston State holding a 3-2 lead following their victory in New Orleans earlier this season.  In the only meeting in Huntsville, Sam Houston defeated the Privateers 72-65 in December of 2000. Sam Houston has won three straight against the Privateers, with the last Privateer victory a 99-67 score at Lakefront Arena in 1987.

The Privateers men's basketball team (11-14, 8-9 Southland) travel to the Johnson Coliseum following an 89-72 defeat at Lamar on Thursday, extending their losing streak to three games in a row. In the contest freshman James Harrison scored a career-high 17 points on 6-of-9 shooting, but it wasn't enough to slow down Lamar who shot 54% on the way to victory.

Kevin Hill has emerged as a force down low lately for New Orleans. The sophomore forward has led the Privateers in rebounding in five of the Privateers last six contests, collecting 62 rebounds during that span. Hill has also scored in double-figures in four straight contests, and has a double-double in three straight.

Sam Houston State (20-9, 12-5) enters the season finale in third place in the Southland, following a 71-54 victory against Southeastern on Thursday night. Leading 37-27 lead at halftime, the Bearkats cruised to victory with guards Kaheem Ransom and Dakarai Henderson each chipping in 11 points on the night.

A balanced team,  the Bearkats enter with the third ranked offense in the Southland, scoring 77.1 points per game and a defense ranked fourth,  only allowing 70.1 points per game.  Cold-blooded from beyond the three point line, the Bearkats shoot 39.2%, good for second in the conference behind Incarnate Word. Jabari Peters, Paul Baxter, Dakarai Henderson, and Paul Mason all shoot over 40% from deep for Sam Houston State. In meeting between the two teams earlier this season, the Bearkats scored right at their average (77), while giving up their average (71) and connected on 9-of-20 three-pointers (45%).
