NEW ORLEANS
– The University of New Orleans baseball team (30-21) was victimized by two-out hitting as the Louisiana-Lafayette Ragin' Cajuns (34-19) batted around twice and coasted to a 17-3 win after seven innings at Maestri Field at First NBC Ballpark on Tuesday.

Both teams traded a single run in the second. The Cajuns started off with a one-out RBI double by Nick Thurman to chase home Steven Sensley. The Privateers answered when Kyle Bracey jumped ahead 2-0 in the count and drilled a solo home run into left to level the score at 1-1. From then on it was all Cajuns who broke the game open in the third.

Six runs came across for the Cajuns in what wound up being the deciding inning. A bunt single started the frame off and a hit-and-run put runners on the corners with no outs. After a stolen base moved Kyle Clement up to second, an RBI ground out and an RBI sac fly followed to put the Cajuns back in front. Four more runs came across, all with two outs as Louisiana-Lafayette extended the advantage to 7-1.

The Cajuns added two more in the fourth and another in the fifth to push the lead to 10-1. The Privateers hoped to put up a big number in the bottom of the fifth. A one-out single and an ensuing walk put multiple runners aboard. Aaron Palmer just beat out an attempted double play to keep the inning going and Samuel Capielano followed by reaching on an error that scored a run. The Privateers loaded the bases on a walk drawn by Dakota Dean, but the Cajuns limited the damage by inducing a ground out.

The Cajuns continued to pile on in the sixth, adding seven more runs. The Cajuns had 19 hits as a team and seven players had multi-RBI nights. Clement, Stefan Trosclair, and Nick Thurman each had three hits. The Cajuns racked up 10 two-out hits as a unit on the night.

The Privateers got the ninth home run of the season from Bracey who continues to pace the team in that category. Ray Veit collected a pair of singles in four at-bats. Preston Marsh went 1-for-3 with an RBI. The Privateers used six different pitchers on the evening.

Wyatt Marks picked up the victory for the Cajuns, going five innings and allowing three hits and two runs (one earned). Marks struck out seven batters and walked three. Will Bacon pitched a scoreless sixth inning. Chris Charpentier and Reagan Bazar combined in the seventh to finish out the game.

UNO is back in action against Nicholls in a three-game series starting Thursday. First pitch for the series opener in New Orleans is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
