Baseball Victorious Against Tulane 9-5

NEW ORLEANS – The University of New Orleans baseball team hosted crosstown rival Tulane at Maestri Field at First NBC Ballpark on Tuesday evening, defeating the visiting Green Wave 9-5.

In the victory, every batter in New Orleans' (17-13) lineup recorded at least one hit, with junior catcher John Cable posting a team-best three. Senior infielders Aaron Palmer and Samuel Capielano both recorded a pair of hits, while junior infielder Chase Crump hit his first home run for the Privateers and contributed a career-high four RBI.

"I thought overall we did a good job tonight," head coach Blake Dean said. "[Riley] Hodge had his best performance of the year. He went out there and threw strikes which gave us a chance to win. We played pretty good defense, minus one play, and we got some big two-out hits which helped us get the early lead."

The Privateers scored the bulk of their runs in the fourth inning, using seven hits to score seven runs in response to a pair of tallies from Tulane (12-17) in the top of the frame. UNO tied up the score with a sacrifice fly from Owen Magee and a single from Cable in back-to-back at bats, scoring Palmer and Capielano. Senior outfielder Hezekiah Randolph moved Cable to second with a single in the ensuing at bat, followed by a three-run homer from Crump to give UNO the 5-2 lead. The final two runs of the inning came from junior outfielders Jay Robinson and Jared McKay, who both scored off a single from Palmer.

"We were being aggressive that inning," Dean said. "Crump got a big hit which gave the team a spark. We kept constant pressure on their pitchers who couldn't find the strike zone and capitalized on it."

The Privateers added two more runs to their lead in the fifth, loading up the bases with a double from Magee, a single from Cable and a walk for Randolph. Crump sent a Magee home with a bases-loaded walk, followed by a hit from Robinson to send Cable home.

On the mound, senior right handed pitcher Riley Hodge got the start, going four innings with two runs allowed off of five hits with a pair of strikeouts. Junior left handed pitchers Matthew Gillis and John Michael Stephens, senior right handed pitcher Ryan Leone and junior right handed pitcher William Griffin all made relief appearances.

For Tulane, Hunter Williams, Jarret DeHart and Sal Gozzo all logged two hits, with DeHart also contributing a pair of RBI. Ted Andrews threw a team-best four innings for the Green Wave, allowing no runs off three hits with five strikeouts.
