Baseball Drops Final Midweek Game Of Season 8-6 To Tulane

NEW ORLEANS – The University of New Orleans baseball team played its final midweek contest of the 2017 season on Tuesday evening, dropping an 8-6 decision to Tulane at Turchin Stadium for a home-and-home series split.

New Orleans (25-26-1) threw eight different pitchers in the loss, with freshman righty Grant Baker logging a team-best 2.0 innings with one run off one hit and two strikeouts while freshman southpaw Christopher DeMayo, senior lefty Hunter Medine and junior left-handed pitcher Matthew Gillis all contributed scoreless innings.

"We were both in the same boat," head coach Blake Dean said. "With a big weekend series coming up we had to save our pitchers, so we had to let some guys extend more than we normally would. We hit the ball well so hopefully we can carry that into this weekend. We are going to have to score against Northwestern State if we want to win."

The Privateers scored the bulk of its runs in the fourth inning, using a two-RBI double from junior right fielder Tristan Clarke and a home run by sophomore center fielder Orynn Veillon to score five runs. UNO added another tally in the seventh inning, as a single from junior third baseman Owen Magee sent senior shortstop Aaron Palmer home.

Clarke paced the offense with two hits and two RBI, with Veillon also contributing a pair of RBI. Junior catcher John Cable drew a walk in his first at bat of the game to extend his current on base streak to a season-best 15 games, adding a single later in the contest, with Magee and freshman second baseman Darren Willis each chipping in one hit.

For Tulane (25-28), Hunter Hope boasted three RBI off two hits, while Jarret DeHart went 3-5 at the plate. On the mound, Keagan Gillies tossed a game-high 3.0 innings, holding the Privateers without a hit.

The Privateers wrap-up the regular season with a three-game Southland Conference series against Northwestern State, with the first game scheduled for Thursday, May 18 with a 6:30 p.m. start time.
