Offense Shines in 14-3 Victory

JT Mauldin had two doubles in the win

NEW ORLEANS – The offense exploded for 14 runs in the Andre Dawson Classic finale en route to a 14-3 victory over Southern University (1-3) Sunday afternoon at Maestri Field. The University of New Orleans ended the Andre Dawson Classic/MLB Urban Youth Academy Invitational 2-1.

Returning to their home field Sunday, the Privateers put up five runs in the first but opened up the floodgates, batting around in an eight-run seventh.

Offensively for the Blue and Silver, the big blow of the afternoon came off the bat of Jacob McFadden – a three-run home run in the big seventh frame. Owen Magee collected another multi-hit game with two hits and an RBI. John Thomas Mauldin, Beau Bratton and Colin Morrill tallied two hits apiece. Seven of the nine starters registered a hit in 13-4 rout.

Rafael Martinez earned his first win of the season after tossing two innings of two-hit ball. Southern starter Markaylon Boyd was tagged with his first loss on the season with the six runs allowed in 4.0 innings. UNO starter Brayson Smith did not factor in the decision but struck out three in 3.0 innings.

HOW IT HAPPENED
UNO got the scoring started in the first inning after Jay Robinson led off with a free pass and would later come around to score on Ducote's double down the left field line. The Privateers extended their lead after a Mauldin double. The Blue and Silver went on to add another run on Bratton's single to give the good guys a 5-0 lead.

Southern added runs in the third and fourth but UNO got a run back in the fourth after Bratton (walk) came around to score on Darren Willis' base hit to make it 6-2 Privateers.

The Jaguars made it a three-run ballgame with a run in the fifth before New Orleans blew the game open with eight runs on three hits in the seventh, the dagger being McFadden's big fly.

John Michael Stephens and Matthew Oset tossed scoreless eighth and ninth innings, respectively, to shut the door. Overall, the Privateer bullpen allowed just one run in six innings.
