NEW ORLEANS – Darren Willis continued his hot streak at the plate but the University of New Orleans (2-2) could not dig its way out of a hole against Jackson State (1-0) in the 4-2 loss Tuesday evening at Maestri Field.
Offensively, the Privateers were led by Willis, who saw his batting average eclipse the .500 mark after going 2-4 at the plate.
Tigers hurler Kevin Perez earned his first win of the season, tossing 5.0 innings of two-run ball.
Eric Orze (0-1) was tagged with the loss after allowing three runs (two earned) in 3.0 innings. Jose Tirado was credited with a six-out save.
Kyle Arjona was outstanding out of the 'pen with three shutout innings and five punchouts.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Jackson State took a 4-0 lead with a run in the second, two in the third and a run in the fifth. New Orleans put two runs on the board in the fifth to cut the deficit after Willis, who led off with a single, scored and
Kenny Yetter crossed the plate on
Cody Ductote's infield single.
