LAFAYETTE, La. – Orynn Veillon and
Pearce Howard accounted for four of the eight Privateers hits Wednesday evening but the University of Louisiana at Lafayette (24-19) squeezed its way to an 8-6 win over the University of New Orleans (18-25) at M.L. "Tigue" Moore Park at Russo Park.
Mathew Oset (2-2) was saddled with the loss after allowing two runs in the seventh. ULL reliever Dylan Moore (2-0) earned the win after going 4.0 innings and striking out three.
Beau Bratton extended his hitting streak to 14 games and scored a run while Veillon and Howard tallied two hits apiece.
Cody Ducote went yard in his return to the lineup.
HOW IT HAPPENED
In the leadoff spot,
Pearce Howard extended his hitting streak to 10 games with a single and the freshman outfielder advanced to third on a misplayed ball in the outfield, allowing the Maryland product to score on
Owen Magee's sacrifice fly.
In the bottom frame, Louisiana erased the lead with a run.
The Privateer offense looked hot early with UNO jumping out to a 5-1 lead after scoring a run in the second on
Darren Willis' RBI ground out. After a scoreless third, New Orleans plated three in the fourth, highlighted by Ducote's long ball – the sixth of the season for the senior. The six home runs tied Howard for the team lead.
However, the Ragin' Cajuns scored three in the bottom half of the inning to make it a one-run ballgame.
The next inning featured a bit of the same with the clubs trading runs, sending us to the sixth with the Silver and Blue ahead 6-5.
Louisiana capitalized on small ball with a squeeze play bringing home two in the seventh, putting ULL in front for the first time in the game. An insurance run crossed the plate in the eighth and the Privateers bats cooled down late in the game as the Ragin' Cajuns were able to defeat New Orleans 8-6 in the lone meeting this season.
