NEW ORLEANS – Pearce Howard and
Jay Robinson went 5-for-9 with four RBI but
Owen Magee stole the show, capping off an 11-inning victory with a two-run walk-off home run to lead the University of New Orleans (19-25, 8-11 Southland) to a 6-5 win over the University of the Incarnate Word (25-18, 10-9 Southland) Friday evening at Maestri Field.
Down 5-4 with two outs in the 11
th,
Collin Morrill forced the count full and drew a walk to put the tying run on first. That set up Magee and on a 2-1 count, the senior third baseman blasted a laser just left of the scoreboard in left field to clinch a 6-5 game one win for the Privateers. Magee finished 2-for-6 with two RBI,
Collin Morrill scored two runs from the leadoff spot, Howard went 3-for-5 with two RBI, Robinson was 2-for-4 with two ribbies and
Darren Willis was 2-for-5.
Brayson Smith settled down after allowing three runs in the opening innings and tossed four scoreless to finish with three strikeouts in 6.0 innings.
John Barr struck out three in 4.1 innings but the pitcher of record was
Reeves Martin (1-3) after recording the final two outs in the top of the 11
th. For UIW, right-hander Tyler Miller went 8.0 innings and allowed three runs – all unearned – but picked up a no-decision. Cody Allen (2-3) was charged with the loss after giving up three runs in 2.2 innings.
Beau Bratton's reached base safely streak extended to 15 games and Howard's hitting streak now stands at 11 games.
HOW IT HAPPENED
UIW struck first with a run on three hits but the Privateers stormed back with three in the bottom of the first, beginning with
Collin Morrill's double to opposite field. After Bratton drew a walk, Howard brought home two on an oppo double and Robinson followed with a single up the middle to put UNO in front 3-1.
The Cardinals tied the game in the second and the score remained 3-3 until extras as Smith matches Miller with zeros.
Incarnate Word doubled in a run in the 10
th but Robinson knotted the game with an RBI single to score Bratton.
The 11
th began the same way with UIW taking a 5-4 lead before a two-out rally that began with a walk (
Collin Morrill) ended with Magee's two-run blast.
