Willis Ties Game in Ninth but Errors Give UIW 4-3 Win in 10

Shortshop went 2-for-4 with two RBI

NEW ORLEANS – Down two with two outs in the ninth, Darren Willis drove in two on a single to center field to send us to extras. However, errors allowed the University of the Incarnate Word (26-18, 11-9 Southland) to score the game-winning run in the 10th inning to defeat the University of New Orleans (19-26, 8-12 Southland) 4-3 Saturday afternoon at Maestri Field.

Willis finished 2-for-4 with two RBI, plating Orynn Veillon and Jay Robinson in the ninth for UNO's first runs since the opening frame. Scott Crabtree recorded two hits and also walked.

HOW IT HAPPENED
New Orleans scored a run on a balk after Beau Bratton singled and Veillon doubled to put runners in scoring position.

Bryan Warzek cruised through the first four innings but UIW was able to take a 3-1 lead in the fifth on just one hit, drawing three walks and two hit by pitches. The southpaw finished with nine strikeouts in 6.1 innings. Rafe Schindler retired a batter, Christopher DeMayo struck out a hitter in 1.1 innings and Rafael Martinez faced the minimum in a scoreless ninth.

A leadoff hit by pitch (Veillon), Robinson single and Crabtree walk loaded the bases for UNO. With two outs, Willis drove a base knock to center field to bring home two and knot the ballgame at 3-3, sending us to extras for the second consecutive day.

In the 10th, New Orleans committed two errors to put UIW back in front 4-3.

WIN-LOSS RECORD
Bernie Martinez (6-2) went 1.1 scoreless in relief of Luke Taggart after the right-hander went 8.2 innings. Reeves Martin fell to 1-4 after giving up the unearned run.
