Gates Posts First Collegiate Double-Double at Hawai’i

Box Score HONOLULU, Hawai'i – Gerrale Gates finished with his first career double-double (14 points, 10 rebounds) and New Orleans (1-4) forced 20 turnovers in Sunday's 79-71 loss to Hawai'i (4-2) in the Stan Sheriff Center.

The 10 rebounds tie Gates' career-high, set when New Orleans hosted Southeastern Louisiana last season. Bryson Robinson drained four triples to move into fifth place on the program's three-pointers made list. The senior finished a team-high 17 points and a career-best five steals. Damion Rosser and Troy Green each added 13 points.

FIRST HALF
The Privateer defense swarmed early with Gates, Green and Robinson picking up a steal apiece before the first media.

Hawai'i went on a 7-0 run to take a 12-6 lead, but Robinson put an end to it in style, with back-to-back steals/points to make it a two-point ballgame. Midway through the stanza, the Privateers forced six Rainbow Warrior turnovers.

The Privateers closed the gap late as the defensive continued to force Hawai'i miscues and the first half came to a close with New Orleans trailing by just two, 31-29.

Gates led all players with 12 points on 5-of-10 shooting and six rebounds. The sophomore picked up two and-ones in the first. Bryson Robinson and Lamont Berzat each registered three steals and the Privateers posted nine as a unit to UH's two. The defense forced 14 Hawai'i turnovers, the second most the Rainbow Warriors have in an entire game this season.

SECOND HALF
The Privateers began finding Robinson on the wing for the triple to take a 32-31 lead. The three-point put Bryson in sole possession of fifth-place on the program list with 124 makes.

Moments later, Robinson did the same to put UNO back in front one.

The Rainbow Warriors 7-0 run ended on Gates' pair from the line with 14:42 remaining. The fourth steal by Robinson (tying a career-high) ended with Green connecting on a corner three to knot the game at 44-all.

The Privateers remained within one possession with six minutes remaining in regulation.

Hawai'i extended its cushion to seven at the under-four media and ended the game with its second most points scored this season in the 79-71 victory.

NEXT UP
