New Orleans Track & Field Announces 2020 Schedule

FULL SCHEDULE

NEW ORLEANS - The New Orleans track & field program announced its 2020 schedule that will feature eight indoor and 10 outdoor meets, per head coach Brian Johnson on Friday.

It is a new look for the Privateers as Johnson and staff were able to secure one of the most well-rounded groups of male and female athletes that the program has seen in recent memory with the addition of 25 new student-athletes.

Both squads are looking to keep the momentum going from last year, Johnson and his staff's first with the group. Each team made strides last season as the men set a new program-best with 31 points at the Southland Conference Outdoor Championships while the women improved their point total at the outdoor championships for the third consecutive year.

"I am excited that it's track time," Johnson said. "We have 25 new athletes joining our program and I think our opener at LSU is going to be a great start to our season."

The Privateers open the indoor campaign with LSU's Purple Tiger Invitational on January 10 in Baton Rouge, La. The squads will then take a couple weeks off from competition before returning with UAB's Green and Gold Invitational in Birmingham, Ala. on January 24-25.

New Orleans will then split the group as some athletes will compete at McNeese's Indoor Invite in Lake Charles, La. while a select group will head to Houston for the G5 & Mid-Major Invitational the weekend of January 31-February 1. The teams will then close out the regular-season with meets at Sanford University on February 14-15 and a return to LSU on February 21.

Indoor championship season gets underway with the Southland Conference Championships on March 1-2 in Birmingham, Ala. The 2019 NCAA Division I Indoor Track & Field Championships are set for March 13-14 in Albuquerque, N.M.

The indoor campaign features stops at both LSU and Houston, two of the best sprinting programs in the country. It will serve as great tests for New Orleans as they advance through the season. The Houston men finished second overall at the 2019 NCAA DI Indoor National Championships.

The outdoor competition features a meet for five straight weeks once it kicks off with the McNeese Cowboy Relays on March 14. The Privateers will then compete at ULL's Louisiana Classic (March 20-21), Mississippi State's Al Schmidt Bulldog Relays (March 27-28), the Florida Relays (April 2-4) and a meet at Southeastern (April 10-11).

The teams will get some well deserved rest from competition before a return with the LSU Alumni Gold meet on April 25. The regular-season concludes with the Houston Invitational on May 1.

While the fact of Houston and LSU is being restated, Florida has one of the best track & field programs in the nation across the board as well and the Florida Relays attract some of the best talent in the country. Florida's men placed second at the 2019 NCAA DI Outdoor National Championships while Houston was right behind in third and LSU took seventh. On the women's side, LSU placed third overall and Florida finished sixth.

"I am looking forward to competing against some of the best athletes and teams in the nation as we compete in meets like the LSU Invitational, Florida Relays and Houston Invitational," Johnson added. "We also have a lot of solid local meets like at Southeastern and ULL."

Outdoor Championships season begins with the Southland Championships in Abilene, Texas on May 15-17. The NCAA Regionals are next on May 28-30 in Lexington, Ky. while the NCAA 2020 Division I Outdoor National Championships will be June 10-13 in Austin Texas.
