This Week in New Orleans Athletics - Week Five

NEW ORLEANS - The New Orleans Privateers volleyball team (9-7, 2-0) looks to build on their strong first week of conference in their first trip to the Lone Star State. New Orleans will take on Sam Houston State on Thursday and HBU on Saturday. The match times are set for 6:30 and 1:00 p.m. respectively.
 
The Privateers golf team will continue their fall slate when they take part in the David Toms Intercollegiate in Shreveport, La. The tournament starts on Saturday and runs through Sunday.
 
TOP 50
The men's basketball top 50 all-time players countdown continues through the week. Numbers 36 to 30 will be revealed daily throughout the week.
 
VOLLEYBALL
Sh'Diamond Holly is racking up the blocks in bunches. The freshman middle blocker was in on eight blocks against Lamar. In the last six matches, Holly has registered 30 total blocks. She enters the week in fourth in the Southland in blocks per set (1.04).
 
The Privateers will be looking for their second consecutive road win at Sharp Gym. New Orleans opened Southland play in 2018 with a four-set win over the Huskies in Houston.
 
Ehize Omoghibo was named Southland Offensive Player of the Week last Monday for her .429 attack percentage at the College of Charleston Invitational. Omoghibo followed that up with a 17-kill performance and a .586 attack percentage vs. Lamar.
 
Lucie Pokorna continues to pace the Southland in assists per set. Her 9.75 assists per set leads the field with Meghan Wozniak (Nicholls) currently in second at 8.88 assists per set.
 
GOLF
Grayson Gilbert finished the Jim Rivers Intercollegiate tied for 16th. Gilbert had 12 of the Privateers' 42 birdies for the tournament and shot the lowest round of the tournament by a Privateer (second round 69).
 
This weekend marks the penultimate fall tournament for Coach Jeff Lorio's bunch. The fall schedule ends with the TVA Community Credit Union Invitational hosted by North Alabama (Oct. 21-22).
 
New Orleans has posted six rounds in the 60s through the first two tournaments: two each from Gilbert, Florian Moosmeier, and Ryan Fulton.
