This Week in New Orleans Athletics – Week 21

NEW ORLEANS – New Orleans women's basketball is on a six-game win streak and remains at Lakefront Arena this week for two games, the men's basketball squad visits South Texas Wednesday and returns for Allstate Sugar Bowl Alumni Night Saturday, men's and women's tennis compete in a total of six matches in the first full week of the spring season.
 
PROMOTIONS
Wednesday is Bring Your 'A' Game on the Lakefront and all local students with 'As' on their report card will receive a free ticket (general admission).
 
Baseball will host Fan Day on Saturday, beginning at 1:30 p.m. at Maestri Field. Fans can purchase tickets at the event that culminates with an intrasquad.
 
Basketball will recognize the former women's basketball student-athletes and coaches at halftime of the women's game and the former men's basketball greats at the intermission of the men's contest. Saturday is presented by Allstate Sugar Bowl.
 
MEN'S BASKETBALL
New Orleans (6-12, 2-6 Southland) visits Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (7-12, 3-5 Southland) Wednesday at 7 p.m. at the American Bank Center and returns to Lakefront Arena Saturday at 6 p.m. to host Nicholls (12-7, 6-2 Southland) on Allstate Sugar Bowl Alumni Night.
 
Bryson Robinson is second in the league in scoring, averaging 18.1 points per game.
 
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
Winners of six straight, the Privateers close out their homestand welcoming the Islanders (11-6, 5-2 Southland) Wednesday at 7 p.m. and Nicholls (4-13, 1-7 Southland) Saturday at 4 p.m.
 
New Orleans sits in fourth in the Southland with a 9-7 overall record and 5-2 mark in league play. It's a balanced attack offensively, led by Rehema Franklin's 12.3 points per game. Whitley Larry is averaging 6.6 rebounds, 2.3 steals and 1.8 blocks per contest.
 
MEN'S TENNIS
The Privateers men's tennis team (0-1) returns home for two matches this week. They will face Prairie View A&M on Tuesday and Jackson State on Friday. Both matches are slated for a 2 p.m. start.
 
NOTES
- This week starts a five-match homestand for the Privateers which goes through Feb. 8.
- New Orleans lost the spring opener against VCU on Jan. 19.
- The Privateers are 4-0 against Prairie View A&M and 16-0 against Jackson State.
 
WOMEN'S TENNIS
The spring opens for the women's tennis team also on Tuesday, Jan. 21 against Prairie View A&M. The Privateers will also face Jackson State on Friday with both matches going a 2 p.m. at the University Tennis Center.
 
New Orleans will then travel to Hattiesburg for matches against Florida A&M (Jan. 25) and Southern Miss (Jan. 26).
 
NOTES
- Six Privateers return from last season's team which finished 13-10 overall (6-5 in Southland play).
- The Privateers competed in three fall tournaments. They defeated two Southland schools (Nicholls and Lamar) at the George Fourmaux Invitational.
- Ank Vullings is the leading returner in wins (13 singles, 15 doubles).
 
BASEBALL
Saturday is Fan Day at Maestri Field, beginning at 1:30 p.m. Emmanuel Pepis will emcee the event and introduce our 2020 coaching staff and Privateers baseball team.
 
Media Day is scheduled for Friday, January 31.
