NEW ORLEANS – New Orleans men's basketball makes the long-awaited return to the hardwood on Thanksgiving Day against #RV BYU at the Marriott Center in Provo, Utah. Tip-off has not been scheduled as of yet.
Jude Young will bring you the action on the Privateers Sports Network, NASH Icon 106.1 FM.
The Privateers defeated the Cougars in the lone meeting – a 1987 NCAA Southeast Regional contest in Birmingham – 83-79.
"We are excited to get the season started at BYU," said Slessinger. "The Cougars will be a tremendous challenge and coach Pope is one of the best in the country. Our guys are anxious to get back on the court and compete and we are grateful for President Dr. (John) Nicklow, Mr. (Tim) Duncan, Ms. (Dena) Freeman-Patton, and the Ochsner Medical and Sports Medicine Family to get us to this point safely."
ABOUT THE COUGARS
"The Cougars bring tremendous size and depth led by 7-3 All-American candidate Matt Haarms," said Slessinger. "They will play with great pace and be aggressive offensively. It will be a great opportunity for us to see where we are. We hope to have the same result we did the last time we played them in the NCAA Tournament in 1987."
Mark Slessinger enters his 10
th season as the leader of the men's basketball squad. He begins the campaign just five wins away from tying
Tim Floyd for the second most wins (126) in program history. He is the longest tenured coach on the Lakefront.
Earlier this month, the Privateers were picked to finish eighth in the preseason poll and
Troy Green was named to the preseason second team. He enters just 57 points shy of becoming the 24
th member of the illustrious 1,000 club.
