NEW ORLEANS – The New Orleans Privateers men's basketball team hits the road for a pair of games against power four schools. A trip to Mississippi State on Monday will be followed by a visit to #15 Texas Tech on Wednesday.
The Privateers (2-3) are coming off a long road trip to the West Coast that saw losses to Pepperdine and Fresno State. In Friday's 85-76 loss to the Bulldogs,
Jakevion Buckley collected his second double-double of the season with 25 points and 14 rebounds.
Through five games this season, the Privateers are top five in both three-point field goal percentage and three-point field goal percentage defense. New Orleans has hit 34.8 percent of their attempts from beyond the arc while limiting opponents collectively to a 23.1 percent clip.
New Orleans also sports two of the top six rebounders in the Southland Conference thus far. Buckley is fourth in the league at 7.5 rebounds per game. Close behind him is
MJ Thomas who has 6.8 boards per game. The Privateers as a team have a rebounding margin of +2.0 over their first five opponents.
Texas Tech is one of two remaining ranked opponents the Privateers are slated to play with a mid-December trip to national runner-up, Houston on the horizon. The Privateers are 1-1 all-time against the Red Raiders. Against Mississippi State, the Privateers are 1-9 all-time and 0-7 in Starkville.
ABOUT THE OPPONENTS
Mississippi State is looking to bounce back after losses in the Hall of Fame Classic last week to Kansas State and New Mexico. Josh Hubbard has led the Bulldogs' offense this season averaging 23.8 points per game which ranks sixth in the nation. He's attempted 85 field goals, 33
rd most in the nation.
Texas Tech (4-2) has lost to a pair of ranked opponents in Illinois and Purdue. Four players are averaging double figures for a Red Raiders offense that scores just over 82 points per game. JT Toppin leads the team with 21.8 points per game and he has added 10.4 rebounds per game through the first six contests.
