This Week in New Orleans Athletics - Week 26

NEW ORLEANS – The Privateers went 8-0 this weekend and look to continue the momentum ending February and into March.
 
BASEBALL 
It's a busy week on the diamond with five games on deck. New Orleans will travel to South Alabama (Tuesday) and Tulane (Wednesday) before returning to Maestri Field for a weekend series against UConn.
The Wednesday game against Tulane is the first of the three-game Pelican Cup series. The UConn series is sponsored by the Allstate Sugar Bowl.
NOTES
-Gaige Howard collected six hits on the weekend including three in the 11-0 victory on Saturday over Arkansas State.
-The Privateers are coming off their first road series sweep since March 2018 against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
-Privateer starters allowed four earned runs in 16.1 innings pitched over the weekend. The pitching staff has a 2.93 ERA through seven games.
 
MEN'S BASKETBALL
The Privateers welcome Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Lakefront Arena and head to Nicholls Saturday at 3 p.m.
 
New Orleans (8-18, 4-12 Southland) is coming off an 82-77 victory at McNeese. Troy Green scored a career-high 25 points and Bryson Robinson followed with 21, marking the third time two Privateer student-athletes score 20+ in a game.
 
Robinson is just seven three-pointers away from tying James Parlow for the most three-pointers in a single season on the Lakefront (85). He is three away from tying Christavious Gill (198) for second-most by a Privateer.
 
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
After clinching its Southland Tournament berth with a win over McNeese Saturday, New Orleans is looking for its fourth consecutive win when visiting Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at 7 p.m. The game will take place at the Dugan Wellness Center on the campus of TAMUCC. UNO heads to Thibodaux to take on Nicholls Saturday at 1 p.m.
 
The next win for the Privateers will set a new program record for conference victories since joining the Southland. New Orleans is locked into the No. 5 spot with their 11-5 conference record. The Privateers trail the fourth-place team, Abilene Christian, by just a single game. The Privateers have a three-game lead over the group of teams bunched together behind in the standings.
 
BEACH VOLLEYBALL
The Privateers head to Miami for the FIU Invitational Friday & Saturday. New Orleans is coming off back-to-back 3-2 victories over Southern Miss to begin the season 2-0 for the second consecutive year. In the wins, Veronica Corcoran and Lucie Pokorna won in straight sets at No. 1, Victoria Corcoran and Ally Carr won both at No. 2 and Brianna Vega and Hannah Volpi took No. 4 twice.
 
New Orleans will play No. 11 FIU at noon and San Diego City at 4:30 p.m. Friday, and Missouri State at 7:30 a.m. and Florida Memorial at 10:30 a.m. Saturday.
 
TRACK & FIELD
New Orleans heads to the Birmingham Crossplex for the 2020 Southland Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships Sunday & Monday. Both programs are ranked within the Top-30 of the South Central Region by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA). The majority of Sunday's action will get underway with running events hitting the track at noon and the field events getting underway at 1 p.m. Monday will feature a day of finals that begins with field events at 10 a.m. and the track portion of the schedule beginning at 11 a.m. A complete schedule of the Southland Championships can be found here.
 
WOMEN'S TENNIS
The Privateers open Southland play on Friday when they host the Lady Jacks of Stephen F. Austin on Friday, Feb. 28 at 2 p.m. New Orleans will then take on Sam Houston State on Sunday, March 1 at 11 a.m. at the University Tennis Center.
 
NOTES
- Friday will mark the first match in 20 days since their two-win day against Loyola and Southern on Feb. 8.
- Five Privateers are undefeated in singles heading into the weekend.
- No doubles tandem has lost a match yet in 2020. As a unit, the Privateers are 10-0 in doubles matches.
- Last season, the Privateers edged out Stephen F. Austin 4-3. New Orleans lost a 4-3 decision at Sam Houston State in 2019.
 
GOLF
The Privateers have a quick break this week before hosting the Gulf Coast Collegiate March 2-3 at Diamond Head Country Club. Along with nine teams from around the region, participants will be shooting on the 72-par 6,832-yard Pine Course which has a 72.6 rating.  Live Scoring will be available on UNOPrivateers.com and Golfstat.com.
 
In their lone home tournament last season, New Orleans placed second and Grayson Gilbert won the individual crown in his collegiate debut, finishing five strokes under par at English Turn Golf Course.
 
NOTES
- Last week's third-round score of 279 was the best round of the Jeff Lorio era, the best round since 2006, and a top-five single round in program history.
- Florian Moosmeier's third-round score of 66 was his second time with that score this season, and the third time a Privateer has shot a 66 this year.
- Over three rounds last week, four different student-athletes shot career bests: Lukas Heckmann (215), Brady Bennett (221), Nolan Lambert (224) and Thomas Artigas (224).
