ALL HAIL THE SAINT
University of New Orleans graduate guard
Derek St. Hilaire was named the Southland Conference Men's Basketball Player of the Week after he cemented himself as one of the nation's best as the Privateers competed in three games over the Thanksgiving holiday.
After he posted averages of 21.6 points, three rebounds and one assist per contest as UNO went 2-1 over the past week of play, the Atlanta, Ga. native is now ranked 13th in all of NCAA Division I and tops in the Southland in scoring (21.6 points per game), 11th in the country in free throw percentage (95.7 percent), sixth in the nation in field goals made (56) and ninth overall in total points scored (151).
Over the three games, St. Hilaire averaged 20-plus points in all three contests and has now gone for 20-plus in six of seven Privateers games so far this season. He also shot 50 percent from the field (23-of-46), knocked down seven threes (7-of-16 from beyond the arc) and went a perfect 12-of-12 from the charity stripe.
St. Hilaire has now racked up 10 consecutive double-digit games, dating back to last season. He is the first Privateer to win the weekly conference honor in 2021-22 and this nod is the second overall during his UNO career.
TURNING THE RECORD BOOK GREEN
Senior guard
Troy Green has had quite the career on the Lakefront. Now in his fifth year at UNO, the St. Rose native ranks in the top-10 all-time in several categories. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Green is the only men's basketball student-athlete at UNO to ever play games across five different seasons. Named All-Southland at the end of 2020-21, Green was named to the Preseason All-Southland team for the second year in a row. Last season Green was one of just three Southland student-athletes to finish top-10 in the league in scoring (15.7 points per game), field goal percentage (.500) and in the top-20 in rebounding (5.3) per game in conference play.
OH CANADA!
Junior transfer
Daniel Sackey had plenty to be thankful for over the Thanksgiving holidays. In three games at last week's UNO Classic the former U-17 Canadian National Team member averaged 8.7 points per game and shot 47.6 percent from the field - including 44 percent from beyond the arc. Taking over ball handling responsibilities last week he averaged 3.7 assists per game as well.
HELLO OLD "FRIEND"
Aggies Head Coach Buzz Williams went 14-17 overall and 9-9 in league play during his lone season as the helm of the Privateers in 2006-2007. Williams lead UNO to the Sun Belt quarterfinals that season before resigning to become the head coach at Marquette. Aggies assistant coach Devin Johnson was a student-assistant for Williams at UNO, a 2008 graduate of UNO, and also spent time with the New Orleans Hornets (now Pelicans) staff.
PRIVATEERS AGAINST THE SEC
The Privateers are 8-42 all-time against current members of the Southeastern Conference, including a 3-30 record away from New Orleans. The most played SEC opponent is LSU with 16 meetings between the two programs. On the flip side UNO has never faced Arkansas, Kentucky, Missouri, or South Carolina.
MR. 300
Coach Sless hit a major coaching milestone on Friday, Nov. 19 against Rice – his 300
th game on the Lakefront. Slessinger and his family were honored prior to tipoff. He has coached every Southland game in school history, was named the 2016-17 Southland Coach of the Year and has led the Privateers to three postseason appearances, including the 2017 NCAA DI tournament.
