NEW ORLEANS – The New Orleans track & field program added another standout to its women's roster as Director of Track & Field
Brian Johnson and Distance Coach
Brock Moreaux announced the addition of
Alexandra Weir from
USF. The move was made official on Tuesday.
Weir spent the first couple of years of her collegiate career in the American Athletic Conference with the Bulls program. She will have three years of eligibility remaining with UNO across the track and indoor and outdoor seasons.
"I am super proud to announce the signing of Alexandra," Johnson said. "She is a huge addition to our women's distance program. Alexandra will bring us the depth we need in order to compete for the Southland XC Championship. I also have no doubt she will score points for us as well come track season."
"From my immediate conversations with Alex I was excited about the potential of adding her to our women's team," Moreaux added. "She brings a very bright energy as well as several years of experience competing at a high level. With the addition of Alex, we will round out arguably one of our best-recruiting classes of distance runners in many years. She will play a big role in our journey for a championship title."
Weir, a Toronto, Ontario native, finished 38th overall at the 2020 American XC Championships in early February with a time of 22:52.6 over the 6K course. She followed it up with a 17th-place showing in the 1500 and a 37th-place finish in the 5000 at the 2021 American Outdoor Championships in mid-May.
Her best championship performance so far of her collegiate career on the track was at the 2020 American Indoor Championships as she posted a seventh-place performance in both the mile and DMR to go with a 35th-place showing in the 3000.
Weir is battled tested on the course as well as she had raced in two American XC Championships along with an appearance at the NCAA Division I South Regional back in 2019. She did do battle against the Privateers once at USF during cross as well as a freshman. Weir faced New Orleans at the FSU Invitational and would have been the second UNO student-athlete through with her 13th-place finish.
She will enter New Orleans will collegiate bests of 18:08.9 over 5K and 22:35.6 over 6K for cross to go with track PRs of 2:12.53 in the 800, 4:31.98 in the 1500, 9:48.87 in the 3000 and 17:57.02 in the 5000.
