NEW ORLEANS – The University of New Orleans' regionally ranked Cross Country teams will make their second trip to College Station, Texas in under a month to compete in the South Central Regionals on Friday morning.
The Privateer women are currently ranked No. 6 in the South Central Region following the program's first Southland Conference Championship two weeks ago in Thibodaux. New Orleans won just its third women's conference championship in school history by 55 points over second-place Lamar – the largest margin of victory at a Southland Cross Country Championship since 2014.
Ariana Jimenez,
Tshwanelo Maruping,
Alexandra Weir and
Rebecca DeKay all finished inside the top 10 earning All-Southland recognition, while Maruping was also named Southland Newcomer of the Year.
Anna Martin finished in 12
th-place, and all nine Privateer women set personal bests at the Southland Championships.
On Oct. 15 the then No. 11 Privateer women finished in 13
th place at the Arturo Barrios Invitational on the same course they will run on Friday. Jimenez and Weir finished 28
th and 29
th in a field of over 300 with times of 21:19.3, and 21:23.6 to pace UNO. The team finished ahead of No. 4 LSU, No. 8 Tulane, No. 12 Arkansas State, and No. 14 Rice and placed the best among all Southland and Louisiana schools.
The UNO women will be making their 11
th appearance at the South Central Regional, and their fourth appearance during Head Coach
Brock Moreaux's tenure on the Lakefront. Their best finish came last year when they placed in 9
th place out of 23 teams with a point total of 244. Current Privateers Jimenez finished 15
th with a time of 21:14.0, Weir finished 22
nd with a time of 21:28.3, and Martin finished 99
th with a time of 23:13.7.
The Privateer men, ranked No. 9 in the latest South Central Regional poll, also had a strong performance at the Southland Championships. The Privateers finished in third place with 81 points after a 5-4 tiebreaker over McNeese. The third-place finish was the best at any conference championship in program history, and 81 points was the lowest point total at any conference championship in program history.
Kolyn Saltzman earned first team All-Southland honors after finishing in fourth place with a time of 24:00.18, while
Jaden Forester earned second team honors after finishing in ninth place with a time of 24:23.09.
The UNO men will be making their ninth appearance at the South Central Regionals with their best finish also coming last year – ninth place with 244 points. Returnees Saltzman (21
st place, 31:39.5),
Cade Litolff (39
th place, 32.18.5), Forester (46
th place, 32:30.4), and
Gary Sandrock (129
th place, 24:57.3) all ran last season's South Central Regional for the men.
The top two teams in each race will qualify for the NCAA Championships on Nov. 19 in Stillwater, Okla. In addition, the top four individual runners in each race who are not a member of either of the top two finishing teams will also qualify to run individually at the NCAA Championships.
