NEW ORLEANS – Junior Cross Country runner Alexandra Weir has been named an All-Academic Athlete by the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association after her efforts both on the course and in the classroom last fall.

Alex currently has a 3.59 grade point average as she pursues her degree in sociology. The Toronto native was recently named to the 2022 Southland Fall Commissioner's List, as well as the 2022 Southland All-Academic team. She was also named All-Academic twice by the American Conference during her days at the University of South Florida.

Last fall she finished in third place at the UNO XC Opener, and in seventh place at the Southland Championships as a key member of a squad that won the program's first ever Southland Championship. Weir was then named All-Region by the USTFCCCA for the second straight season after finishing 22nd at the South Central Regional in College Station, Texas.

To earn All-Academic status from the USTFCCCA a student-athlete must maintain a 3.2 grade point average over the most recent grading period, and either finish in the to 25% of their NCAA regional or earn All-American status at the NCAA Championship.

Only 71 student-athletes earned the distinction, and Alex becomes the first Privateer to be honored since current graduate assistant Arina Kleshchukova did it in back-to-back years during 2019 and 2020. They are the only two USTFCCCA All-Academic honorees in school history.

Both the men's and women's teams were named All-Academic teams by the USTFCCCA as well. The women's program earned the distinction for the third time in the past four years (2019, 2020, 2022) after finishing with a 3.36 grade point average.

The men's program was named All-Academic by the USTFCCCA for the sixth time in the past eight years (2015, 2016, 2017, 2019, 2020, 2022) after compiling a 3.59 grade point average – a top 20 grade point average in the country among men's cross country teams.

To qualify for All-Academic distinction teams must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better – 216 teams qualified on the men's side, with 249 teams qualifying on the women's side.

HEAD COACH BROCK MOREAUX
(on Alexandra Weir)
"Alex deserves all the love and recognition for this award. It was a particularly special semester for her because she managed to juggle leading a conference championships squad, All-Regional performance, maintaining her class schedule, graduating, and being accepted in grad school all within the same couple months. She is a true model student-athlete and I'm grateful to have her leading our program."

(on the team awards)
"It's the perfect icing on the cake for both the men and women to be recognized for their hard work in the classroom after a historical season for them. Although we love running fast, we realize it's the classroom that will set us up for majority of our goals after college."
