GAME NOTES: UNO | LSU | SOUTHLAND
NEW ORLEANS – The University of New Orleans men's basketball team (2-8, 0-1 Southland) will renew hostilities with the LSU Tigers (9-2, 0-0 SEC) when they travel to the Pete Maravich Assembly Center on Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m.
James White continues to lead the Privateers and the Southland in scoring at 18.6 points per game. White has now scored in double figures in nine of his 10 games at UNO, and his five games of 20 or more points are tied for the most in the Southland.
The Conyers, Ga. native is also second in the conference in rebounding at 7.4 per game and ranks first in the league in defensive rebounds per game at 6.4 per outing. Freshman
MJ Thomas is fourth in the league in rebounding with 6.8 per game and ranks first in the league - and 35th in the NCAA - with 3.3 offensive rebounds per game. UNO is the only team with two student-athletes in the top five in rebounding. In fact only one other school as two in the top-10 - Nicholls.
Jah Short and White have both seen heavy minutes this season. Short is averaging 34.19 minutes per contest, the most in the Southland and the 70th most in the NCAA. White checks in right behind him at 34.00 minutes per contest - second in the Southland and 81st in the NCAA. Short has played 40+ minutes twice this season, including an almost 43-minute shift against Tulane, while White has also played a pair of 40+ minute games, including 44+ minutes against Tulane.
SCOUTING THE TIGERS
LSU enters the game with a 9-2 record, including a 7-0 mark at home and an 85-75 win over Florida State. Both losses have come on neutral courts — the first, a 74-63 loss to Pittsburgh in the Greenbrier Tipoff at Colonial Hall in White Sulphur Springs, W.Va. The second was a 74-64 loss to SMU at the Compete 4 Cause Classic at the Comerica Center in Frisco, Texas.
Cam Carter leads the Tigers in scoring with 16.6 points per game, while Corey Chest leads LSU in rebounding with 8.6 per game. As a team, LSU ranks No. 28 in the NCAA in rebounds per game at 41.0 and No. 24 in defensive rebounding at 28.55.
Defensively, the Tigers are 17th in the country in blocks per game (5.5), with Daimion Collins No. 4 in the SEC with 2.0 blocks per game. LSU also holds teams to just 38.2% shooting from the field, good for No. 19 in the NCAA.
Coming into Sunday with an RPI of 58, LSU was picked 14th in the SEC preseason poll, ahead of Oklahoma and Vanderbilt. The Tigers had no preseason All-Conference selections.
