NEW ORLEANS – The New Orleans Privateers recorded 23 digs in the first set and pushed a potent Florida A&M Rattlers squad but fell on the short end of a 3-0 (25-21, 25-12, 25-21) score on Sunday afternoon at the Human Performance Center.
New Orleans held a Rattlers squad that came in hitting .253 on the season to an .089 attack percentage in the first set. The Rattlers made a difference with their block though as they recorded five rejections in the opening set.
Though New Orleans was behind for most of the set, they saved three set points. Two of those came off kills by
Buse Kocakaya and
Akeir Scales.
Florida A&M upped their attack percentage to a .533 clip in the second set. They used an 8-0 run to break the set open. Iyonnie Sanford had two kills in that stretch to help lead the Rattlers to a 2-0 lead in the match.
Set three saw more long, spirited rallies including one that lasted 90 seconds and ended in a Brooke Lynn Watts kill for Florida A&M. Once again faced with a hill to climb on the scoreboard, the Privateers saved three set points.
A service error, a tandem block by Scales and
Courtney Roundtree and an attack error forced Florida A&M to dig deeper to close out the match. They did so on the next rally after a Privateer attack error closed out the day's proceedings.
INSIDE THE BOX
Chelsea Daffin landed just shy of another double-double with nine kills and 11 digs.
Defne Eciroglu finished with 13 assists and 11 digs. Scales and
Divine Muo each added four kills.
Ava Kennon finished with two total blocks.

The Privateers will begin the Pelican Invitational on Thursday, Sept. 19 against UC-Riverside.
