Privateers Gain Valuable Experience at the Arturo Barrios Invitational

NEW ORLEANS – The University of New Orleans men's and women's cross-country teams gained valuable experience competing against a tough field at the Arturo Barrios Invitational on Friday morning. The women finished 28th, while the men placed 29th among 38 teams competing in College Station, Texas.

Anais Sulpice led the way for the New Orleans women, finishing 118th in a time of 22:01.09. The graduate student was in 139th place after 2,000 meters before passing 21 runners on her way to the finish line.

Michela Papalia finished 155th with a time of 22:24.0, Petra Ire placed 164th in 22:30.01, freshman Alexa Daverio finished 239th in 23:43.1, and Daira Rojas-Vasquez placed 249th in 23:55.6. Sulpice, Daverio, Rojas-Vasquez and Candilynn Vega were all competing in their first collegiate 6K.

The New Orleans men were led by Mason Appleton, who finished in 25:04.6 to place 143rd. Antonio Delgado placed 236th with a time of 26:16.3, Brandt Blanchard finished 247th in 26:38.0, Landen Juneau was 268th in 26:55.4, and Benjamin Stumm rounded out the scoring, placing 274th in 27:04.01.

Freshmen Blanchard, Juneau and Stumm all gained momentum as the race progressed. Blanchard sat in 299th at the 2K mark before passing 52 runners. Juneau moved up from 292nd to pass 24 runners, and Stumm advanced from 313th, passing 34 runners down the stretch.

Texas A&M won the men's team championship with 51 points. The men's individual champion was Titus Kimaru of Texas Tech, who finished in 22:36.1. Elizabeth Khatevi of Texas A&M won the women's 6K in 18:56.0, while Wake Forest claimed the women's team title with 78 points.

Next up for the Privateers is the Southland Conference Championships, hosted by Northwestern State on Oct. 31. Race times are yet to be announced, but fans can watch the Privateers compete for the men's and women's titles on ESPN+.
